The familiar queues at Croatian motorway toll booths — for many a ritual marking the start of summer holidays — are set to disappear. According to the ÖAMTC, Croatia is undertaking a major overhaul of its tolling infrastructure. Until August 2026, nothing changes for drivers: fees can still be paid in cash or by card at the traditional booths.

But from September 2026, the country will begin phasing out the old system. The nationwide switch to a fully digital tolling model is scheduled for 1 March 2027.

Two Digital Payment Options for Cars and Motorcycles

By the end of February 2027, Croatia plans to replace its toll stations with 212 digital toll portals and 1,744 cameras. The first stretch to transition will be the A3 motorway between Zagreb and Lipovac.

Holidaymakers will have two main ways to pay:

  • Digital license plate registration — Drivers of motorcycles and vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes can register their plate online and link a payment method. The system automatically charges the toll when the vehicle passes under a portal.
  • Quick‑registration lanes — Ideal for spontaneous travelers. Special lanes on the motorway will scan the vehicle and allow immediate registration on the spot.

Mandatory Toll Box for Heavy Vehicles

The second option is the ENC toll box, a device already familiar to many frequent travelers. While car drivers can choose freely between digital registration and the box, it will become mandatory for all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, including:

  • Lorries
  • Buses
  • Heavy motorhomes

The aim is clear: reduce congestion, especially during the busy summer season, and eliminate the long queues that have often stretched for kilometers.

What This Means for Holidaymakers

For travelers from Austria and across Europe, the transition promises:

  • Faster journeys without stopping at toll booths
  • More predictable travel times during peak season
  • A simpler, more automated payment process

Until the end of summer 2026, however, everything remains as usual — so no need to change your holiday routine just yet.
